Erik Howell is a Principal in First Annapolis’s European business with personal specialization in credit and debit card issuing, retail cards, credit innovation, and merchant acquiring. Erik joined First Annapolis’s U.S. business in 2001 and has been based in Prague since 2008. Erik advises card issuers, merchant acquirers, retailers, processors, networks, and payments innovators on strategy and execution throughout Europe. Erik has led a variety of consulting engagements related to growth strategy, geographic expansion, market research, roadmap development, tactical planning, new product development, and portfolio management, among others.

Erik is also an experienced mergers and acquisitions advisor to financial institutions, retailers, and financial sponsors. Erik has advised several European banks on the formation of merchant acquiring alliances, multiple financial sponsors on due diligence and contract negotiations, and has advised on card issuing partnership transactions totaling over $5 billion in receivables, including Edcon on the sale of their 11 billion rand private label business to Barclays; First Annapolis earned the 2012 ‘Deal of the Year’ award from Acquisition International for our role as sell-side advisor to Edcon.
